I'm so proud of you Jason! Today's post is awesome and you should feel so proud (but I know it can feel very exposed and vulnerable to be so real). Thank you for trusting us with your truth.

I went to parent-teacher conferences yesterday for my children. I was one proud mama hearing all the warm and loving words the teachers used to describe my children. I was most touched by all the social/emotional observations. I guess they really are listening about being kind and generous and helping those in need (even though they can be monsters at home)!!!!

@Lissa-I always use nature to talk about death with small children. For example how a flower starts as a seed, is watered, loved and cared for. It grows, lives its full and beautiful life. All living things are born and die. However, mommy and daddy..(or whoever) are very young and healthy flowers who have a lot of growing to do!

@Liz Welcome

@Lissa - I find that empathy is the key.

At 4 year old your daughter is just starting to fully get that she's separate from Daddy and you and all things in life change. The thought of the relationships with the people closet to her changing can be really, really scary.

One of the best children books I've read on loss and grief is tear soup.

Welcome Liz! We're so happy to have you among us.
I was just putting my 4 year old daughter to bed and she said, "Wouldn't it be sad if you and Daddy died and I have to live at preschool?" I said yes, and she started crying.

Wow- she's been talking a lot about dying lately, and I'm honestly not quite sure how to handle it. Any wise parents out there with tips?
