Beyond Horoscopes

What is astrology? Astrology is the study of the planets, sun, moon, asteroids and how their movements impact each other and, by extension, influence us, especially when compared to our birth charts ... as above, so below. For me, astrology is like a language with planets, zodiac signs, their relationship with one another functioning as alphabets. Once the language is learned, one can understand their birth chart or a relationship chart (also called synastry & compares two birth charts together). There are other astrology charts that can be cast and interpreted, depending on what information is sought. There are different branches of astrology -- Western (Tropical), Vedic (Sidereal), Chinese, Mayan. I practice Western astrology.

What is a birth chart? To start, everyone has two charts -- a natal (or birth) chart and a solar chart. At the moment of our birth, the sun, moon and planets are assigned to specific zodiac signs and astrological houses with the zodiac sign rising in the Eastern horizon assigned as the Ascendant or Rising sign (designated as the 1st house). This frozen moment in time with that specific combination of ascendant/planet-sign-house placement is the natal chart. It reveals what one's strengths are, where the challenges lie, what potentials there are, etc. The potentials of a natal chart takes a lifetime to unfold. A solar chart, on the other hand, designates the Sun's zodiac sign as the 1st house. In the absence of the time of birth, a solar chart is cast. It's not as accurate as a birth chart, especially for forecasting, but can still provide helpful information. Horoscopes are written using the solar chart.

For example, I'm a Cancer-Sun (the sun is the soul) with an Aries-Moon (the moon is the heart) and a Virgo-Ascendant (the ascendant is the 'mask' the Sun wears). Cancer is a sensitive sign. Aries is not. Both are instinctive and protective -- Cancer protects by embracing and possibly taking the blow, while Aries protects by fighting. Virgo is an earth sign that grounds my Cancer and Aries counterparts. Virgo is analytical, practical and keeps me from getting in too much trouble :) Click here to see my birth chart, in case you're wondering what a birth chart looks like.

To cast your own birth chart, you'll need your complete birth information -- date, time and place. Get a free copy at http://astro.com

I don't know if you catch Jennifer Shelton's (aka Sweetheart from the Stars) blog but she wrote a great article on all the upcoming changes we can expect.  You may want to check it out Esten.  :)  She makes it really easy for a newbie, such as myself, to grasp the big picture.

I'm afraid Jen when we open up to our truth, people who related to our older selves (or their image of who we are) start to disappear from our lives.  I think it's part of authentication and life in general. I'd take this as a huge sign that you are right on track and congratulate yourself for standing by your truth rather than caving in to popularity.  I've learned to deal with this by sending them a blessing of pure love and wish them the absolute best as they travel their own path.  Remind yourself that you two are still connected and your relationship will never truly end, it's just taking a break and will begin again when the time is right for both of you to grow together.  That could be next year, 20 years from now, or another life time.  I also figure this opens a space in your life for someone who will appreciate and aid you with the journey your taking up.  Not a bad deal really!!!

Thanks Jan for getting back to me.  I'll check out the links.

Happy New Year!

@Monica apologies for such a delayed reply. I've been absent on OP. Yes, eclipses have significance in astrology (http://bit.ly/DJuAk) and I also posted something on the Dec 21 solar eclipse (http://bit.ly/dOSpzf)

@Jennifer we must come from the same place, where astrology is 'of the devil' :)

Saw tonight that there will be a full moon eclipse on December 21, the same day as the winter solstice.  If your interested in viewing it, here is a link:http://www.mreclipse.com/LEdata/TLE2010Dec21/TLE2010Dec21.html

Does this kind of rare event have any significance in Astrology.

Jennifer, I know I've been feeling the effects of the Jupiter retrograde - the need to go in. Finally did a tarot spread I've been meaning to do for the last couple of weeks. Plus I feel that I've been neglecting myself spiritually, & need to get some meditation back into my routine!

LOL, Jennifer. Scorpy-Moons make me obsessive, too. Together with my Virgo-rising, I drive myself crazy. I make myself feel rushed and try to fit unrealistic goals for the day. I know I'm doing it, but I can't always help it :)

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but this astro alignment of late has hit me heavily in regards to my family. I'd like it to lighten up a bit & give me some forward motion in regards to my move, but who knows if that will happen. Jupiter, get your butt into gear!!

Jennifer! Hahaha!! Your post makes me feel less insane!! I've been thinking about this upcoming eclipse a lot as well. I had so much planned to do today, but ended up walking around in a daze for most of it & ended up completely neglecting what I'd set out to do. I was also planning on going to a gig & ended up spending the night with friends I hadn't seen since coming back to Australia. Talk about unexpected! I don't want to tempt it, but who knows what tomorrow will be like!

Hi Jennifer, thank you. I used to do my new moon wishes every month! I should really get back to it. I do make sure to do them during solar eclipses though.
